Francophone Week took off in the capital on Tuesday with the participation of the French-speaking embassies and institutions here.
To mark the event, a press conference was held at the Novotel Al-Anoud led by French Ambassador Bertrand Besancenot to spell out the programs lined up for the next two
weeks.
Besancenot said that the French language is important globally since it is spoken by 900 million people in different parts of the world. For some, it is their mother tongue while others use French as their means of communication.
“It’s a shared language of 77 countries who are members of the Francophone organization,” the envoy said, adding that these countries share a common culture, training, development, common values, laws, human rights and democracy.
Film enthusiasts will be treated to a film festival featuring the latest Francophone movies with a plethora of films from different countries taking part in the Francophone Week.
To celebrate the event, he said, the Francophone countries have organized a series of movies, concerts, cultural events and competitions among the French-speaking population in the city.
The events include, a family show – “Alice in Wonderland” at the Lebanese Embassy and film shows to be screened at the Swiss and French embassies and in the auditorium of the Canadian mission. The International French School has also organized competitions among the French speaking students.
