JAZAN: A popular Sunday market in the Huroob province of Jazan attracts buyers and visitors from all over the region every week. It is a famous heritage site and regarded as an economic asset of the city.
Located in a mountainous region 100 kilometers to the east of Jazan city, the market sells a wide array of products; pottery and ceramic appliances, traditional agricultural tools and clothes, aromatic plants, pure honey and cow ghee to name a few.
One can gauge the region’s historical and heritage value by looking at the products being sold there.
There are over 87 villages in the province with a population of around 65,000.
Vendor Sulaiman Nasser has been selling food, coffee and tea for the past three decades. Customer favorites are Arabian coffee, mint tea and warm fish stew in the early hours of the day.
“The market is loyal to heritage lovers,” said shopper Salem Horoobi, adding there is no shortage of customers all year long and that they further increase during the holidays.
Hussein Jassim, an elderly visitor, reminisced about the times he used to visit the market 30 years ago, which was then located in the middle of a valley. He said the Sunday market has been around for over 100 years.
Blacksmith Ahmad Al-Ghazwani has been working for 60 years now, and apart from Huroob, has his corners set up in various popular markets in Sabia, Aridha and Beesh.
Mohammad Ghamari, another blacksmith at the Sunday market, inherited the skill set from his father and has been taking part in several events such as the National Heritage and Cultural Festival (Al-Janadriah) for the last 20 years as well as other events in the Kingdom and Dubai.
Local female artisans also have their corners where they showcase handmade jewelry, decoration pieces and adornments, and perfumes.
