BANGKOK: Saudi Arabia beat Bahrain by six wickets on Tuesday in the ICC World Cricket League regional qualifier in Chiangmai, northwest of Thailand.
The victory folllowed Saudi Arabia's massive 390-run victory at the weekend over China. The Saudis are favorites to win the event which is the first step toward qualifying for the 2023 World Cup.
The match had a delayed start due to overnight rain that caused significant damage to the wicket. The Saudi captain won another crucial toss and asked Bahrain to bat on a wet and extremely difficult wicket. Ibrar Ul Huq, the Riyadh paceman, bowled his fiery spell while from the other side Mazhar Abbasi was controlled with in and out swingers.
However, it was Imran Arif who came in the 16th over and caused havoc in Bahrain batting with his career best 3.1 overs in which he gave away just 4 runs for his 4 wickets.
Bahrain was bundled out on 78 in 20 overs, while Saudi Arabia reached the target of 79 with the loss of four wickets in a low-scoring match.
Saudi Arabia had a disappointing start with both openers going out on duck, but then Afzal , Hammad and Mazhar made sure the damage was put under control as they registered their second straight win of the tournament being played at the Royal Chiangmai Golf Club grounds.
Saudi Arabia takes on Kuwait Friday. The other teams taking part in the tournament are Bhutan, Kuwait and host Thailand.
