ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nasir-ul-Mulk chaired the first meeting of Pakistan’s caretaker Cabinet on Wednesday.

The interior minister gave a briefing on the functions of the ministry and its departments, and on initiatives to ensure internal security and law and order in the country.
He also briefed the Cabinet on the ministry’s measures to help the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and provincial governments hold “free, fair and peaceful elections,” the prime minister’s office said.
Dr. Shamshad Akhter, minister of finance, revenue and economic affairs, gave an overview of the economy.
While noting satisfactory gross domestic product (GDP) growth of around 6 percent, the Cabinet underscored the need for immediate measures to address issues related to balance of payment, fiscal and debt sustainability, and better management of public sector enterprises.
The prime minister called for “a comprehensive strategy containing immediate measures, as well as a blueprint of a long-term structural reform package for the consideration of the incoming elected government,” his office said.
Earlier on Wednesday, army chief Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa and Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman Gen. Zubair Mahmood Hayat separately met with the prime minister at his office. They discussed matters pertaining to the armed forces.
