ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday condemned a terrorist attack outside Kabul airport that killed at least 13 people, including children, after a suspected suicide bomber exploded in front of the facility.
Dozens of people, including US service members, were wounded in the incident, though Western intelligence agencies had warned of a similar attack by Daesh militants and asked people not to gather at airport gates.
Thousands of Afghans rushed to Kabul airport in a desperate attempt to flee their country after the Taliban rolled into the capital city on August 15.
The international community has since tried to evacuate its diplomats, workers and other nationals, though it has also helped some Afghans leave their homeland since they worked with foreign powers in the last two decades and feared Taliban retribution.
"Pakistan strongly condemns the heinous terrorist attack at the Kabul airport, which reportedly resulted in the loss of several precious lives, including children," said Pakistan's foreign office in a statement.
"Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations," it added. "We convey our sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families and pray for the early recovery of those injured."
In a separate development, Reuters reported that German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas would travel to Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan in the coming days for talks on the latest developments in Afghanistan.
Quoting an official letter, it said that the German FM's talks would focus on how the international community should deal with the situation in Afghanistan and under which conditions agreements with a new government in Kabul were possible.
The news report added that Maas also planned to visit Turkey and Qatar.
