JEDDAH, 25 May — Gulf Arab leaders will hold a consultative summit meeting here tomorrow to discuss the latest developments at regional, Arab and international levels.
Abdul Rahman Al-Atiyya, secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, said the one-day conference will focus on strengthening ties among the six member states. This is the fourth such consultative meeting since the GCC leaders decided to hold a mid-year session every year at their 1998 summit in Kuwait.
The summit is convened at a time when the GCC countries are required to take a unified stand on major issues, especially on the Middle East peace.
This is the first meeting of GCC leaders after Prince Abdullah, the regent, presented an eight-point plan to US President George W. Bush for realizing a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
GCC foreign ministers in an emergency meeting in Riyadh last week upheld the Saudi-inspired Arab peace plan which offers to normalize ties with Israel in return for its total withdrawal from the occupied Arab land and rejected all forms of violence. The meeting also condemned Israel’s ruling Likud party for rejecting the creation of a Palestinian state.
