Saudi-Japan desalt venture established

RIYADH, 29 October — A Saudi-Japanese joint venture for the maintenance of desalination and power plants, said to be the first of its kind in the Kingdom, has been set up in Riyadh.

The joint venture, ACWA Power & Sasakura Ltd. (APS), will offer engineering and rehabilitation services for extending the life of the existing thermal water desalination plants, enhancing their performance, and cutting down operational costs, Dr. Mohammed A. Al-Fouzan, general manager of the new company, told Arab News.

He said an agreement was signed here last week by Dr. Fahad A. Balghunaim, managing director of AWPD, and Toshihiko Sasakura, representative director and president of Sasakura Engineering Co.Ltd. (Japan). APS is a joint venture between Arabian Co. for Water and Power Development (a Saudi holding company) owned by A. Abunayyan Trading Corp. and Al Muhaidib Holding Co. as well as two Japanese companies –- Sasakura Engineering Co. and Itochu Corp. Dr. Al-Fouzan said the new joint venture would seek to provide consulting services and execution of projects for rehabilitating water desalination and power plants.
