RIYADH: King Abdulaziz University, represented by the ear, nose and throat department at the faculty of medicine, organized the “Adrakt” campaign in cooperation with the cochlear implants and hearing aids unit at KAU hospital.
The campaign aims to raise awareness on hearing impairment and the use of cochlear implants during childhood, contributing to increased hearing screenings for newborns and improving quality of life for people suffering from hearing loss.
Chair of the unit, Faisal Zawawi, said that 400 children benefited from the campaign, which saw 130 speakers, logistic workers and organizers take part to raise awareness and conduct tests.
New studies have shown that 13 percent of Saudi children suffer from hearing impairment, he added, highlighting the importance of conducting hearing examinations at birth.
Zawawi said that treatment methods offer several options that depend on the reason and degree of hearing loss.
