Ever since the notion to attack the undernourished and poorly armed people of Iraq took hold, numerous scenarios have been presented in defense of the attack. Many reasons are heard in its favour. In the absence of clarification the world thinks that the attackers either kept the real reason secret, or they, together with millions around the world, consider the destruction of Iraq the route to wealth and prosperity in their own countries. This is achievable through the rebuilding, on a back-to-back basis, financed by Iraqi oil.

All of this may be unbelievable or unthinkable. However, the lists of reasons or deductions are so lengthy, that all and sundry talk about the inevitability of war and forget about the chances for peace. As a matter of fact in some countries these people are regarded as traitors. So all caution against war is dismissed even when it seems to divide countries, or change their habits from French fries to freedom fries or threaten lives or put the lives of the unfortunates in Iraq in more jeopardy. The Iraqi people are in the unenviable situation of looking like the meat in the sandwich, with Saddam on one side and Bush on the other. Either way they are slaughtered.

The ‘neighbours’ are watchfully concerned for themselves and worried for the Iraqis. Their only wish is to know what will become of them in the light of all the conflicting information about the intention of the attacker and their own prospects of survival after Iraq. They read, hear and see many frightening analyses. They feel helpless and resort to eating and praying. Original thoughts can be found in a report published recently in a Russian newspaper It is by a war specialist who is acclaimed to have been ‘on the mark’ with his predictions for the Gulf war, Yugoslavia in 1996 and Afghanistan in 2001. His main reason, above all others, for the attack on Iraq, is testing the latest US weaponry. It is sensitive, precise, modern and complex. With this new advanced weaponry the Iraqi army will be heavily damaged. It will enable the attacker to defeat the enemy. The report predicts that the occupiers will meet heavy resistance from Iraqi suicide bombers leading to deaths among them of no less than half a million.

The report adds that a special devastating bomb will be introduced to demolish war-shelters and buildings to convert them into mass graves. It is also predicted that the air raids will introduce bombs that look like ‘chandeliers’ that branch out and attack different targets. In the early hours of the attack a new type of bomb will be introduced. It is known as the “microwave bomb” which produces radiation at two megawatt over an area of two and half kilometers. This bomb has the capability of destroying anything and everything with electronic instrumentation in its way.

Today, more than any other, we are told the attack is likely to spread, is inevitable and unavoidable. Some will lose their lives; other will lose their wealth. This happens to people who have been discredited around the world for “wrongs” they never committed. Ironically, together with the attacker they condemn the injustice that oppressed them. The region stands with all punishment levied on it in accordance with the laws of the harmed country.

There is no justice or mercy in condemning nations to ruins for atrocities carried out by others. Nations should protect their own territories and people. Equally it is not smart when great nations use their power around the world unilaterally. They will soon exhaust themselves like Alexander or Gengis. Let us not forgot that safety is in numbers. Whenever atrocities are committed regionally or internationally, the rules of law apply and not the law of the jungle.
