NEW DELHI, 24 April 2003 — Indian truck operators yesterday called off a 10-day-old nationwide strike that had crippled the distribution and delivery network and sent commodities prices soaring.
After fresh talks with the government, the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), the country’s largest union of truck operators, said it had agreed to call off the agitation on an assurance that all their demand would be looked into.
“The strike is off,” said J.M. Saxena, secretary-general of AIMTC, refusing to give further details.
The strike had triggered a sharp rise in the prices of food products and paralyzed the industrial sector.
According to industry estimates, the strike was costing the government and businesses hundreds of millions of rupees a day.
