Arms Caches Seized in Ongoing Crackdown

RIYADH, 1 September 2003 — Security forces on Saturday found a large arms cache at a farm east of Abha, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday. Of the two suspects at the scene, one was arrested and one escaped.

One of the owners of the farm told the newspaper he had heard strange noises in an unused room, which led him to investigate the matter. When he reached the room, he found a cache of weapons buried under a pile of rocks. He immediately informed the police who found a machine gun, a sniper rifle, a handgun, 70 machine gun magazines, 24 bullets for the sniper gun, a knife, and a computer.

While sweeping the farm, police spotted two people trying to flee the premises. One of them managed to escape while the other was caught with the help of a citizen.

Sagr Al-Siraei said around 6 p.m. on Saturday he saw two men being chased. He was told that the two men were wanted suspects and volunteered to help. One of the two men took the path to the valley while the other ran to an adjacent farm, he said. He chased the man who ran to the other farm and managed to subdue him until police officers arrived and arrested him. The search for the other suspect continues.

Meanwhile in Madinah, security forces confiscated weapons and ammunition and arrested several suspects in raids at several locations in the city, according to a report in Al-Madinah newspaper yesterday.

The report said that the raid took place in the Waeera district, west of Prince Muhammed ibn Abdul Aziz airport.
