RIYADH: The King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language on Wednesday launched the “Riyadh Dictionary,” a major reference work on contemporary Arabic vocabulary with more than 120,000 entries.
The dictionary was launched under the patronage and in the presence of Prince Badr bin Abdullah,‎ minister of culture and chairman of the board of trustees of the academy, Arabic linguistic academics, linguistic experts and other officials.
Entries in the dictionary are matched with their English counterparts, and each entry has its meaning or meanings explained with one or more illustrative examples.
The dictionary is suitable for use by all users of the Arabic language, including intellectuals, writers, authors, researchers and students.
Abdullah Al-Washmi, acting secretary-general of the academy, praised the Kingdom’s leadership for supporting and disseminating the Arabic language, and thanked Prince Badr for his support in making the dictionary available to all ‎beneficiaries.
He described the dictionary as “a qualitative achievement in terms of timing and significance,” adding that the project witnessed “a unique harmony between computer technology and the lexicographic work team.”
The dictionary will also be a valuable resource for innovators and creators in linguistic technical fields, enhancing Saudi Arabia’s ability to remain at the forefront of digital progress, Al-Washmi said.
Special technology will update the content by monitoring modern terms and vocabulary.
A search engine also will enable programmers and developers to build their own technologies, applications and games based on the dictionary.
