5 Arrested in Yemen

SANAA, 6 October 2003 — Yemeni police have detained five men on suspicion of planning attacks on Yemeni and Western targets, an opposition newspaper said yesterday. The Shoura weekly said the arrests were made two weeks ago after police manning a checkpoint became suspicious of the occupants of a car. Police interrogations revealed the group, which included two Syrians, was planning to import weapons into Yemen to stage attacks and assassinate prominent politicians and personalities, the paper said.
