PATNA, 30 November 2003 — Once again, the Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) D.P. Ojha has targeted the heavyweight Siwan MP, Muhammad Shahabuddin for his wrong deeds. He attacked the increasing menace of “criminalization of politics” here, noting with scorn the way politicians are queuing up to meet Shahabuddin, the MP in jail on a string of charges.
Among those who met Shahabuddin was ruling RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav. Ojha spoke at a function organized by the police for giving away prizes to police personnel and others who contributed to the containment of crime. “Politicians are lining to meet the mukhiya (leader) of the largest gang of kidnappers in India, Muhammad Shahabuddin. Some go to meet him openly and some go secretly,” Ojha remarked, while stressing the system had virtually collapsed.
He named RJD legislators Surendra Yadav and Azad Gandhi as “criminal-politicians” who have amassed “huge properties” within a few years. “From where has this money come?” he asked. Ojha stressed the need for proper leadership in the police. “If we were able to take legal action against such leaders, it was because we worked within the system and upheld the law,” he said.
