RIYADH, 11 April 2004 — Saudi Arabia and Japan will work together to train young Saudis, according to a Japanese agency here.

Seiichi Miyoshi, resident representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), said a Japanese education mission arrived here to explore the possibility of cooperation in the manpower sector and a Saudi educational delegation will be leaving for Tokyo on June 30 to attend a training program.

“The Japanese delegates will meet with Ministry of Education officials to work out plans for cooperation in training,” Miyoshi said.

JICA is responsible for technical cooperation programs of the Japanese government.

The delegates “will discuss the general education system of Saudi Arabia with special reference to educational and training facilities,” he said.

A group of 20 Saudi teachers will be sent to Japan to attend a special training program from June 30 to July 22, he said, in the framework of JICA’s Youth Friendship Program and coordinated by the General Organization for Technical Education and Vocational Training (GOTEVOT).

JICA has organized training programs for some 1,400 Saudi nationals since 1960, working with a number of Saudi government agencies on a range of joint projects.

Japan is the Kingdom’s second largest trading partner with two-way trade reported in the region of $16 billion annually.
