RIYADH, 11 May 2004 — An annual auction of rare goats will be held tomorrow, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday.
The auction includes rare specimens. The best goats are judged by such characteristics as roundness and size of the head, the appearance of the eyes and both body size and color.
Mohammad Al-Huraid, a Saudi Aramco employee whose hobby is rearing goats, said there were goat-lovers coming from as far afield as Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar to attend the auction.
Al-Huraid himself prefers Syrian goats and has made good deals with buyers in the Kingdom and abroad.
He first became interested in goats when he lived in the Eastern Province; he now lives in Asir and has 25 goats worth several hundred thousand riyals.
The price of a “good” goat can be very high.
The rarer the goat type and breed, the higher the price. Al-Huraid recently bought a goat less than 30 days old for SR11,000; he expects the value to increase as the animal grows older.
