Impressive Dodgers Rout BoSox

NEW YORK, 14 June 2004 — Olmedo Saenz homered and drove in four runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 14-5 pounding of the Boston Red Sox in Interleague play at Fenway Park on Saturday.

The Dodgers pounded out 15 hits and after trailing 2-1, scored four runs in the fourth, seven runs in the fifth and a pair in the sixth to cruise to the easy win.

Cesar Izturis had four hits for the Dodgers and also scored twice and drove in a pair or runs, while Juan Encarnacion and Jayson Werth both homered, with Encarnacion scoring four times.

Shawn Green added two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Dodgers, who lost the series opener 2-1 on Friday.

Jeff Weaver (4-7) allowed five runs on five hits over five innings with two strikeouts and four walks to get the win.

In other Interleague games, Derek Jeter had three hits and drove in a run as the New York Yankees edged the San Diego Padres 3-2.

Gary Sheffield drove in two runs for the Yankees.

Jon Lieber (5-3) scattered 11 hits over six innings for the win before Mariano Rivera pitched the ninth for his 26th save. Dennis Tankersley (0-3) was the loser.

In Baltimore, Barry Bonds hit his 675th career homer to offset two homers by Rafael Palmeiro, giving the San Francisco Giants a 9-6 win over the Orioles in the opener of a doubleheader. Palmeiro has 537 homers, moving ahead of Mickey Mantle into 11th on the all-time list.

In the nightcap, Larry Bigbie drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the 12th inning, giving the Orioles a 5-4 win over the Giants and a split of the games. Yorvit Torrealba hit a two-run homer for the Giants.

Eric Hinske homered and drove in five runs and Vernon Wells had four hits, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 15-4 romp over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In Kansas City, Angel Berroa drove in three runs, including the game-winner with a ninth inning single to guide the Royals past the New York Mets 4-3. Joe Randa also had three hits for the Royals.

Jermaine Dye singled in the winning run with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Oakland Athletics past the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-11.

Eric Byrnes hit two home runs for Oakland and Marco Scutaro also homered. Ruben Mateo also hit two home runs for the Pirates, who blew a 10-6 lead in the eighth inning.

In St. Petersburg, Toby Hall and Tino Martinez hit consecutive home runs in the seventh inning, leading the Tampa Bay Devil Rays past the Colorado Rockies 10-7.

Frank Thomas hit a pair of home runs as the Chicago White Sox beat the Atlanta Braves 10-8. Carlos Lee had three hits for the Sox, increasing his hitting streak to 26 games. J.D. Drew and Chipper Jones both homered for Atlanta.

In Detroit, Nate Robertson pitched a four-hit shutout over eight innings to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 6-2 win over the Florida Marlins.

In Minneapolis, Carlos Silva pitched seven strong innings, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Coco Crisp drove in four runs as the Cleveland Indians battled to an 8-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

In the late Interleague games, the Texas Rangers eased to a 7-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Seattle Mariners blanked the Montreal Expos 3-0, and the Chicago Cubs routed the Anaheim Angels 10-5.

In the only National League game, Keith Ginter and Ben Grieve both had two hits and drove in two runs as the Milwaukee Brewers claimed a 7-4 win over the Houston Astros.

Lyle Overbay homered for the Brewers.
