LONDON: Syria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani met US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack in Ankara on Thursday to discuss regional and international issues.
The meeting in the Turkish capital aimed to enhance coordination between the two countries, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
Al-Shaibani said he welcomed the ceasefire between the US and Iran and called for the establishment of strong foundations to enhance regional security and stability.
The minister also met Turkiye’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan. He said that the Syrian Arab Republic shared the vision of the “Four Seas” project with Turkiye, which aims to establish the two nations as key corridors for redistributing energy between the Arabian Gulf, Caspian Sea, Mediterranean and Black Sea.
Fidan said that Syria’s stability was fundamental to regional peace and stability and that Syrian and Turkish security were interconnected.
He said that Israeli expansion hindered peace in the Middle East and urged the international community to curb Israel’s geopolitical agenda.
Syria has accused Israel of breaching the 1974 disengagement agreement through incursions into villages near Quneitra and Suwaida governorate and reiterated its call for Israel to withdraw from the occupied southern Syrian territory and from a UN demilitarized buffer zone it seized in December 2024.
