  • Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Marco Rubio speak over phone
  • Iranian missile attacks on UAE among topics discussed

LONDON: UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan spoke over the phone to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday about the latest developments in the region.

They discussed the ceasefire between the US and Iran and explored ways to achieve peace and security through strengthened collective action, the Emirates News Agency reported.

Sheikh Abdullah praised US President Donald Trump’s efforts to promote peace, particularly between Lebanon and Israel, and said that political solutions were the most effective way to address crises and enhance regional security.

The officials also discussed the impact of Iranian missile attacks on the UAE and other countries and their effect on international peace, energy supplies, maritime security and economic stability.

Lebanon was not included in the initial ceasefire agreed between the US and Iran but Washington this month hosted two rounds of talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials that resulted in two announced ceasefires between the Iranian proxy Hezbollah and Israeli forces. Last week, the 10-day truce between the two countries was extended by three weeks.

Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into the conflict after it launched strikes on Israel in response to the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Feb. 28.
