ISLAMABAD: Billboards hailing the “Islamabad Peace Deal” and featuring portraits of Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir have popped up across Islamabad on Thursday.

Pakistan played a key role in efforts to end the war between Iran and the United States, acting as a mediator and hosting peace talks. The two warring sides signed off on an deal on Wednesday which will see the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

“This is a very proud moment for us,” says Mehwish Ali, who works for a trading company. “We are a peaceful country and we do not promote terrorism.”

Ali hoped the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will help stabilize economic conditions.

“If we look at it from this perspective, it is a very proud moment for Pakistan,” she said.

Azam Shahzad, works in life insurance, described the peace deal between Iran and the US as an “important agreement.”

“In this memorandum of understanding, the whole world is praising Pakistan, the Government of Pakistan, the prime minister of Pakistan, and the field marshal of Pakistan,” Shahzad told AFP.

“We are also feeling very proud about this.”
