While looking for a place to watch a FIFA World Cup match, I came across Cafe Laperouse in Jeddah’s Al-Khalidiyyah district, the famous Parisian restaurant and cafe with locations in Paris, London and Saint-Tropez.
What started as a search for a good spot to enjoy the game turned into a dining experience worth returning for.
The restaurant has an elegant European feel, with high ceilings, chandeliers, parquet floors, painted walls and gold accents that create a luxurious atmosphere. The circular bar at the center adds to the charm, while piano nights during the week make the experience even more special.
I chose to sit outdoors to enjoy the sunset and watch the match. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed evening.
For a light bite, I ordered the smoked salmon, served on rye bread with a tangy sauce, cornichons, capers, fresh dill and citron sauce. The flavors were fresh and balanced, making it a satisfying midday snack.
The Parmesan truffle fries were another highlight. Crispy and full of flavor, they were so good that I ordered them twice. However, at SR42 ($11), the portion felt a little small for the price.
The signature Cafe Laperouse cake was impossible to miss, as it seemed to be on nearly every table. Made with layers of white vanilla cake and topped with torched lemon meringue, it was light, creamy and delicious.
I also tried the chocolate pastilla, a crispy filo pastry filled with melted chocolate, topped with a delicate chocolate tuile and served warm with vanilla ice cream. Rich without being overly sweet, it offered a great combination of textures and flavors.
To drink, I ordered a mojito mocktail, which was refreshing, well-balanced and generously sized, perfect for enjoying throughout the game.
With attentive service, a beautiful setting and plenty of tempting menu options, Laperouse delivers an enjoyable dining experience. It’s a place I would happily visit again.
