LONDON: Iraq’s Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi discussed regional developments with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani at Lusail Palace on Sunday during his visit to Doha.
Al-Zaidi and Sheikh Tamim emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to deescalate tensions in the Middle East in the wake of the US and Iran resuming hostilities on July 7.
They called for the implementation of the memorandum of understanding between the Washington and Tehran, including ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and promoting regional stability, according to the Qatar News Agency.
Al-Zaidi expressed condolences on the passing of the father of the emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, who died at the age of 74 on July 12.
Al-Zaidi visited Washington last week, where he met with US President Donald Trump to discuss investments and military matters. Fighting corruption and ensuring a government monopoly over weapons were two of the key pledges Al-Zaidi made as Iraq’s prime minister in May.
