JEDDAH, 23 March 2007 — A brother physically assaulted his sister, an older unmarried woman, as she was about to consummate a misyar “No Obligation” marriage, the daily Al-Madinah reported recently. The marriage, where a woman agrees to nuptials — usually with a married man — that requires no dowry or other typical marriage obligations. The brother also attacked the groom when he arrived and didn’t spare the marriage official either who was knocked unconscious.
Court Orders Soldier to 8 Months Nonstop Duty
AL-MOWAIH, 23 March 2007 — A Shariah court in Al-Mowaih, a town 200 km to the east of Taif, sentenced a soldier to eight months of continuous work without time off for assaulting another person. The soldier will have to report for duty at his command post at 6 a.m and continue his duties until 3 p.m including the weekend, the judge said. The sentence also stipulated that if he failed to report for duty during this period he will have to compensate at the rate of three days for a day’s absence, the Al-Riyadh newspaper reported recently.
