SWCC, Saudi Aramco to Hold Joint Study on Desalination

DAMMAM, 17 May 2007 — A memorandum of understanding to conduct joint research in the desalinization technology was signed between the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) and the Saudi Aramco at the headquarters of the Saline Water Desalination Research Institute in Jubail, a subsidiary of the SWCC yesterday.

Governor of the Saline Water Conversion Corporation Fehied Al-Shareef signed the MoU on behalf of the SWCC while Khaled Al-Bu Alaynayn, vice president of Aramco for engineering services, signed on behalf of his company.

Saleh Al-Jarrah, director of research and technology at the SWCC, said the MoU is aimed at developing new technologically and economically viable methods of water desalination. The agreement would also endeavor to guarantee the sustained supply of potable water in the country.

Jarrah said the SWCC made several cooperation agreements with various international research agencies mainly from Japan and Singapore in the past. The agreements also included efforts for profitable application of the membrane technology for water treatment.

Several experimental projects are progressing at the institute’s laboratories in Jubail, he said. Various Saudi universities and King Abdul Aziz City of Science and Technology are also cooperating in the researches.
