PUNE, 30 November 2007 — Bollywood superstar Sanjay Dutt walked out of the Yerawada Central Prison here yesterday morning after being granted bail by the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday.
Dutt appeared to be tense but happy as he waved to a small crowd of fans before quickly getting into a waiting car that took him to the nearby Lohegaon airport. Dutt then flew to Mumbai in a chartered six-seater aircraft.
The actor was convicted for taking an AK-56 rifle and a pistol from gangsters linked to the bombings in which 257 people were killed in the financial capital, Mumbai, in 1993.
Dutt had challenged the conviction last month and sought bail until the petition was heard.
He is expected to be out of jail for a while as the appeal could take months or even years to be heard and ruled on by a judicial system burdened by millions of cases.
His lawyers say it could take at least two years to be taken up by the Supreme Court.
Speaking to the media outside his residence in Mumbai, the 48-year-old actor reiterated that he had full faith in the judiciary. He also thanks his fans and the media for their support
