MAKKAH, 25 April 2008 — Police arrested a Saudi man for allegedly swindling thousands of riyals from a number of women in Makkah and Riyadh through a scam that involved offering the women jobs in a company.

The man asked job-seeking women to deposit SR300 in his bank account and keep the receipt, which was redeemable for employment. He is suspected of having committed this fraud numerous times on a number of women in different locations. “Police are still questioning the man to know more about his criminal activities and his motives,” an informed source said, adding that the majority of the man’s victims were from Makkah and Riyadh.

Maj. Abdul Mohsen Al-Maiman, spokesman for Makkah police, told Arab News that the alleged swindler had been involved in four previous scams. He was sentenced to a four-year jail sentence in one of those cases.

“The man used to send text messages to women offering them jobs,” Al-Maiman said. The swindler has been transferred to the central police station in Jarwal, Makkah.
