MUMBAI: The state’s image has been shattered following the Bombay High Court judgment delivered on Thursday relating to the appointment of Maharashtra state Director General of Police Anami Narayan Roy.
The “gang war” in the police department has come to the fore and this issue is not in line with the dignity of the state, alleged the national general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party and former Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde as also the state BJP President Nitin Gadkari.
“The Congress party-led Democratic Front government should select a competent and eligible candidate as the new DGP of the state and correct its mistake,” both the BJP leaders told reporters here yesterday.
Munde alleged that “while appointing Anami Roy to the DGP post last year, the state government had overlooked the criteria for the post of selecting the one of the senior IPS officers from a panel of three, as per the Supreme Court guidelines. And I have been making these allegations from day one. Roy has been appointed to play politics in the police department. After his appointment, gang war began in the police department. The High Court judgment is a big jolt to Roy,” Munde said.
Gadkari said “We have been demanding the removal of Roy for a long time. Roy had a powerful political backing, (an indirect reference to Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar) which even the former state Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was unable to handle. The court decision has come has a strong slap to him. Because of the court judgment, Roy has brought disgrace to the state. Taking a lesson from the judgment, the government should stop meddling in police affairs and appoint a good IPS,” Gadkari said.
