JEDDAH: Lawyers representing a couple whose marriage was brought into question after the wife’s brothers filed a case that they were tribally incompatible have said the couple would not discuss the issue in the media again, as the wife’s brothers consider media publicity of the case as a form of defamation (tash’hir).

The couple approached various newspapers, including Arab News, several weeks ago to publicize their case.

In a previous interview, the husband told Arab News that he wanted his story to be read by the higher authorities and that he did not want to divorce his wife.

Speaking after a court hearing yesterday, the couple’s lawyer, Motasem Khashoggi, said the judge still wants to resolve the issue by reconciling the two sides.

He added that some of the wife’s brothers were not committing themselves to agreeing. He said the next step would be to talk to the wife’s uncles and prevent the divorce.

In a previous Arab News article the couple spoke how the wife’s half brothers agreed to the marriage, but then denied the marriage took place.

The wife said she moved in with her husband several weeks ago after her brothers attacked her and prevented her from staying at the family home in Madinah with her mother and siblings.

She said a close relative helped her travel to Jeddah where her husband lives.
