World Qur’an seminar opens in Kerala

Scholars, writers, theologians, interpreters, translators, linguists, researchers, publishers and academics from India and abroad, including non-Muslims are attending the three-day conference hosted by the university’s department of Arabic language and literature.
“The focus of the seminar is the status of Qur’anic language in the knowledge era from a different perspective,” said A. Nizarudeen, head of the Department of Arabic in the university.
Presentations at the seminar include ‘language of Qur’an’, ‘aesthetics and style’, ‘interpretations of the text in different ages’, ‘Qur’an and science’, ‘attempts of additions and distortions’, ‘Qu’ranic calligraphy and printing’ and ‘cyber version and online Qur’an.’
The participants came from various Indian universities and from such renowned seat of Islamic learning like Al-Azar University in Egypt. Apart from presentation and deliberation of papers, public talks, open forum, Qur’an recitation, inter-university quiz competition and exhibition are part of the program.
On Sunday, Kerala Assembly Speaker K. Radhakrishnan inaugurated a book fair as part of the seminar in the Chandrasekharan Nair Statdium in the city. Pro-Vice Chancellor J. Prabhash presided over the function attended by legislators V. Sivankutty, G. Karthikeyan, and Varkala Kahar.
An international exhibition on Qur’an was inaugurated by Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran on Monday at the Bhagyamala Auditorium of the stadium. Home and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was the chief guest at the function presided over by Vice-Chancellor A. Jayakrishnan. City Mayor Jayan Babu inaugurated the Qur’an pavilion while legislators Kutty Ahamed Kutty, Abdul Kadhar, V. Surendran Pillai and P.M.A. Salam offered felicitations.
Uthradam Thirunal Marthandavarma, the maharaja of the erstwhile Travancore principality, inaugurated the first session of seminar on Thursday at the function presided over by Education and Culture Minister M.A. Baby.
Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurated the public meeting at the Chandrasekharan Nair Statdium in the evening. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy presided over the function. Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi will inaugurate the opening session on Friday while India’s Minister for State for Railways E. Ahamed will preside over the function. Shashi Tharoor, MP, will inaugurate the public meeting in the evening while Sports and Law minister M. Vijayakumar will be the chief guest.
