Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan made the important announcement, closing the curtains on potential confrontations between the government and the Hindu outfits.
The federal Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials had called for a prohibition on the coronation anniversary celebrations, citing provisions in the Archaeological Sites and Remains (Amendment and Validation) Act of 2010 aimed at protecting sites.
This prompted Shiv Sena working president Uddhav Thackeray to sound a bugle of defiance against the ban.
Sena supremo Bal Thackeray said that if the great and mighty Moguls could not stop the coronation of Shivaji at Raigad Fort on June 6, 1674, then who were the ASI officials to stop the Sena from celebrating the coronation anniversary of their leader.
Sal Thackeray also launched a blistering attack on the ASI, terming it a "worthless" department that had killed the bravery of the Marathas against their battle with the Muslim Moguls.
