Down 10-1 in the third inning, the Rockies chipped away against the NL East leader before taking the lead with four runs in the eighth.
Carlos Gonzalez hit a tying, two-run single with two outs, and Tulowitzki and Todd Helton followed with RBI singles.
Colorado also came back from nine runs down to beat Florida 18-17 on July 4, 2008. The NL record for the biggest comeback is 11 runs, and the major league mark is 12.
Reds 12 Giants 11, 12 innings: In San Francisco, the Reds blew a nine-run lead, then regrouped and rallied past the Giants on Joey Votto’s tiebreaking single in the 12th inning.
The NL Central-leading Reds took a 10-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth before San Francisco came back. Aubrey Huff’s sacrifice fly capped a six-run burst in the eighth that put the Giants ahead 11-10.
A throwing error by third baseman Pablo Sandoval in the Reds ninth set up Paul Janish’s tying single. Votto had four hits and four RBIs, including his go-ahead, two-out single off reliever Barry Zito .
Padres 9 Diamondbacks 3: In San Diego, Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer and Miguel Tejada had a two-run shot as the San Diego Padres beat the last-place Arizona Diamondbacks to take a season-high 6 1/2 -game lead atop the NL West.
The Padres’ closest pursuer, the San Francisco Giants, lost to Cincinnati, 12-11 in 12 innings. David Eckstein had three hits and three runs, and Tejada also scored three runs to help San Diego improve to an NL-best 76-49.
Arizona’s Stephen Drew went 4 for 4 with two solo homers for his first career multihomer game.
Drew wound up with a leadoff home run after umpires used instant replay to reverse the original call. His second homer left no doubt, clanging off the top of an advertising sign atop the right-field wall with two outs in the seventh to chase Wade LeBlanc (8-11).
Joe Saunders (1-4) took the loss.
The game was briefly delayed in the third inning when a woman with a Mexican flag and a man ran onto the field, apparently protesting Arizona’s immigration law. Both were quickly apprehended by security and led off the field.
Pirates 5 Cardinals 2: In Pittsburgh, Daniel McCutchen pitched six shutout innings for his third victory as a major league starter, Neil Walker tripled with the bases loaded and the Pirates dealt the Cardinals another damaging loss.
Dropping their fourth consecutive series against a losing-record team, the Cardinals fell 3 1/2 games behind Cincinnati in the NL Central. St. Louis also remained a game back in the NL wild card race.
Marlins 5 Mets 4: In New York, Hanley Ramirez, back in the No. 3 spot, had four hits and Alex Sanabia won his second consecutive start since he was recalled from the minors as the Marlins held off the Mets.
With the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Leo Nunez retired Jose Reyes on a game-ending groundout.
Logan Morrison added three hits and scored twice with his cancer-stricken father in the stands and Gaby Sanchez had a pair of sacrifice flies to back Sanabia (3-1), who took a two-hitter into the seventh inning.
Cubs 4 Nationals 0: In Washington, Starlin Castro hit a run-scoring double in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie and Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run homer to lift the Cubs to a win over the Nationals.
Ryan Dempster (12-8) threw seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight.
Washington’s Jason Marquis (0-7) remained winless this season despite his best pitching performance of the year. He gave up one run on four hits in 7 1-3 innings, walking three and striking out two.
Alfonso Soriano led off the ninth inning with a home run to left-center field, his 21st homer of the season.
Astros 3 Phillies 2: In Philadelphia, J.A. Happ pitched effectively into the seventh inning against his former team and the Astros beat Roy Halladay and the Phillies.
The Phillies, who are 2 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta, have lost three straight to the going-nowhere Astros. They’ve missed an opportunity to gain ground on the Braves, who’ve lost three in a row to Colorado.
Happ (4-2) allowed two runs and five hits in 6 1-3 innings, becoming the second former Phillies pitcher to beat them in this series. Brett Myers did it Monday., Happ won 12 games for Philadelphia as a rookie last year, then was traded to Houston last month for ace Roy Oswalt .
Halladay (16-9) gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings, snapping his six-game winning streak.
Dodgers 5 Brewers 4: In Milwaukee, Manny Ramirez doubled twice and drove in his first run since reports he’s been put on waivers, rallying the Los Angeles Dodgers over the Milwaukee Brewers.
If Ramirez was auditioning for a new club such as the Chicago White Sox, who are rumored to have interest, it certainly was a success.
The 38-year-old Ramirez also walked twice, scored a run and was thrown out at the plate in a bizarre play in the third inning. Hiroki Kuroda (9-11) went seven solid innings. Octavio Dotel earned his 22nd save, and first with the Dodgers since being acquired at the nonwaiver trade deadline.
