The man had come to the Kingdom after being hired by the Health Ministry, said a source, adding that he will now be sent back as an extradition treaty exists between the two countries.
Abdul Rahman Saeedi, director of the Health Department in Yanbu, told Arab News that he has not received the full details of the case and that he is awaiting a report from Yanbu police.
“The doctor was recruited by the Ministry of Health to work as a resident ophthalmologist. He has been working in Yanbu General Hospital for over a year and we’ve not noticed anything wrong about him,” he said.
Saeedi wondered how the doctor was allowed to leave his home country if he had criminal cases pending against him. “The Saudi Ministry of Health usually informs its counterparts in foreign countries when a doctor has been employed to check whether there are any cases against him. The health authorities in this doctor’s native country did not tell us anything,” said Saeedi.
Members of the public have called for investigations into officials at the Ministry of Health who recruit incompetent doctors. They have also called for a re-examination of patients treated by the doctor to ensure he has not committed any medical errors while in the Kingdom.
