Safety is an important concern in all major engineering projects along with industrial and construction sectors. With brisk activity throughout the GCC member states the demand for qualified Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) has never been greater. To prepare students for careers in this field, the university is exploring connections with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH).
The university announced it was looking at the possibility of teaming up with IOSH and NEBOSH so that it could offer certification for HSE officers. Training could range from short courses to a degree program in the field.
Representatives from the safety organizations met recently with university officials and indicated that the resources would be available to develop such programming. The next step will be another exploratory session looking at structuring a long-term relationship between the parties and a plan to implement appropriate curricula for the various programs.
The university’s Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Dr. Nassar M. Shaikh also signed a memorandum of understanding with the American systems-design company VSD LLC to explore development of an interactive relationship focused on technology transfer, research and curriculum development.
Of particular interest are ongoing discussions to develop a visually impaired institution using modern technology. VSD LLC would work as an international advocate for the university in its quest to deliver best-in-class educational services.
Devising specific action agreements and their provisions also were discussed to assist the university with development, implementation, training and services. Other factors also will be evaluated to complete projects in line with international academic trends.
