A Health Ministry official in Gaza city told reporters that Shabban Qarmott died on Monday afternoon after he sustained wounds from shots near Beit Hanoun crossing in northern Gaza Strip.
Witnesses said the Israeli soldiers in one of the watchtowers near the Erez crossing opened heavy gunfire toward the civilian properties seriously wounding the old man.
He was immediately taken to Kamal Edwan hospital in the nearby Beit Lahiya refugee camp, where he died.
The cross-border violence has become an almost daily occurrence, though both Hamas and Israel have said they are trying to avoid further escalation.
Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since a brief Palestinian civil war in 2007, said on Sunday it was urging smaller militant groups to cease the rocket fire.
