Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday its Brazilian unit issued a recall over the weekend to fix the fuel hose, tank and pump parts of the Corolla compact manufactured in Brazil between March 2008 and December 2010, and sold only in Brazil.
Toyota, which makes the Prius hybrid and Lexus luxury models, has been plagued by defects in a range of models, and has recalled more than 14 million vehicles globally since late 2009.
Toyota said there were no reported accidents related to the latest recall, which affect vehicles in Brazil that run on ethanol, as well as gasoline, called flexible fuel vehicles.
Last week, Toyota recalled 2.17 million vehicles in the United States to address accelerator pedals that could become trapped in floor mats or jammed in driver’s side carpeting.
The US Transportation Department also declared its investigation into Toyota closed, including the question of whether unintended acceleration had electronic causes.
This week’s Consumer Reports, an influential US magazine on product quality, named Toyota among other Japanese automakers as the best all-around car makers for the third year in a row in its annual auto issue.
But the continuing recalls are making Toyota’s road to complete recovery a challenge, including in Brazil, one of the world’s fastest growing auto markets.
