5 Colombian police killed in presumed rebel attack

Three officers died and three civilians were wounded Tuesday night in a car-bomb blast targeting a police station in the southwestern town of Jambalo followed by two hours of shelling by homemade mortars, the regional police commander, Gen. Orlando Pineda, told The Associated Press.Fifteen adjoining homes were damaged.Pineda blamed the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, which is active in the region along with far-right militias and drug traffickers.In the second attack, also blamed on the FARC, gunmen fired at a police post from a motorboat on the San Juan river in Andagoya in the northwestern province of Choco, killing two officers and wounding two, said the town’s major, Pastor Mosquera.Latin America’s last remaining rebel army, the FARC has been fighting the government since 1964.
