Striving to widen women’s role

Hidaya Darweesh, editor-in-chief of Kol Al-Watan online newspaper, believes that such workshops enable women to be part of decision-making with regard to issues concerning them.
Darweesh stressed during her talk that the picture is not as gloomy as it looks since there has been a lot of progress in the woman’s status lately that should be taken into account.
Darweesh said women are now in a better position to bring to light their concerns and help in addressing them.
“It is essential for women to be part of the decision-making process, and it is more important for them to be in positions where they can follow up on the application of such decisions,” she said.
Director of Administration & Media Affairs at the Saudi Alzheimer’s Disease Association Sawsan Al-Humaidan stressed the importance of creating positions for women in government bodies and official departments that handle family and women issues.
“A woman is close to her fellow women,” she said. “It is essential to have women working in bodies such as the Ministry of Justice to listen to and understand women’s problems and better represent them.”
Forty-two women from different walks of life had been invited to the workshop aimed at involving women in the development process and highlighting women’s issues. The attendees stressed the woman’s role in helping the family with specialized judges and courts. Another major topic that was discussed in detail during the workshop was a code for social department and the need for it
The group also discussed the need to activate the executive and supervisory authorities to apply courts’ rulings and establishing a family consulting committee at courts.
The workshop highlighted the HRC’s mission to enhance society’s awareness of human rights, increase women’s rehabilitation, provide training in the field and make it part of the school curricula.
The workshop team included women with special needs, housewives, educationists, journalists and social service officers.
HRC President Bandar Al-Iban promised to hold more such workshops to come up with recommendations to achieve women’s goals in various fields in compatibility with social values. There will be more HRC workshops in coming weeks the venue and location of which will be announced soon.
