The other elected members to the executive council are representatives of Japan, China, France, US and Canada.
This is the first time an Asian developing country has gained membership in this organization uncontested. With this election, Saudi Arabia will represent the south and west Asian countries.
The IMO has agreed to Saudi Arabia’s plan to establish an international center for information systems on meteorology, which will be the world's 13th center. The Kingdom will also host the Regional Center for Climate for South West Asia, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Friday.
“The IMO granted the Kingdom its unopposed nomination in recognition of Saudi Arabia’s transparent dealing of meteorological issues in the world,” President of Meteorology and Environment Protection Prince Turki bin Nasser said.
