Suu Kyi told reporters Tuesday after praying at one of Bagan’s ancient temples that she was very happy to take her first vacation with her son in 20 years and have time to rest.
However, she was mobbed by local residents and followed by dozens of plainclothes police during the second day of her visit.
Although the trip is a private one, she has said she will soon travel around the country to meet political supporters, drawing a warning from the state-controlled media that she could cause chaos and riots. Her last political trip to the countryside in 2003 drew huge crowds and ended in her detention.
