The 24-year-old suspect, identified under Dutch privacy laws as “Sabir K.,” was indicted by a federal grand jury in New York on June 22. But his case was held behind closed doors in the Netherlands and no information about it was released until his lawyer Andre Seebregts began talking.
Sabir K., a citizen of both the Netherlands and Pakistan, claims he was mistreated in Pakistan before being deported to the Netherlands in April. He was arrested upon arrival and has been held since.
Meanwhile, prosecutors said in Berlin they have charged two Germans with links to a terrorist group connected to Al-Qaeda.
Germany's Federal Prosecutors' Office said Friday charges of membership in the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan were filed at Duesseldorf state court against a 24-year-old, identified only as Omer C.
They say the second suspect, 29-year-old Turgay C., is charged with supporting the group by raising funds of at least €39,000 ($52,000).
Prosecutors say Omer C. joined the group in 2009 to take paramilitary training in a camp in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. He was injured during fighting for the IBU there and later returned to Germany to raise funds.
The group has carried out attacks against foreign troops in Afghanistan.
