He was addressing the 40th anniversary celebrations of his country's Victory Day at the Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh.
“Our colleagues should work hard to enhance the image of Bangladesh in the Kingdom and also help contribute to the socioeconomic development of our motherland,” Islam said..
The day’s program included a recitation from the Holy Qur'an followed by the ceremonial hoisting of the national flag.
Messages from the country's president, prime minister and foreign minister were read out. The morning event was attended by more than 500 community members including embassy officials, students and teachers of Bangladesh International Schools and representatives from organizations connected with the South Asian country in the Kingdom.
Islam urged his countrymen to send their remittances through official banking channels and encouraged them to invest in Bangladesh and become active partners in the country’s development.
The liberation war that began on March 26, 1971, culminated in victory on Dec. 16 the same year. “Thus Bangladesh came into being as a sovereign and independent state,” the envoy recalled, paying rich tribute to the martyrs who had made sacrifices for the country's independence.
A special prayer was held for the freedom fighters who lost their lives during the war of independence and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of Bangladesh.
The English Section of the Bangladesh International School celebrated with cultural programs. Dr. Qamarul Islam, Dr. Kazi Masudur Rahman, chairman and vice chairman of the school’s board of management respectively, were present at the commemorative event.
School Principal Mohamed Shaheed Mohamed Hussein said such historical events are observed in schools to help students find out about the rich history of their country.
“Most of the cultural programs organized by the students provides a glimpse into the past,” he added.
