"This benevolent work will continue all the year round," the society's chairman Sulaiman bin Awwad Al-Zaidi told Arab News.
He said the fresh meals are hygienically packed before they are served to beneficiaries. "Through this project, the society is aimed at satisfying the requirements of the poor and needy people, relieving them from the humiliation of begging," he said.
Al-Zaidi asked all sections of society, including businessmen and private individuals, to participate in this humanitarian project.
The project started a few days ago and meals were distributed among the poor and needy in the various districts in Makkah and also among visitors of the Grand Mosque.
"Umrah and Haj pilgrims and visitors to the mosque will benefit from the scheme, which will be implemented under a consummate plan," Al-Zaidi said.
He said the society would be an intermediary between the philanthropists and poor people. "We will ever remain committed to the poor and needy in the holy city," he said.
Supervisor of the project Mubarak bin Awwad Al-Qurashi said the meal consists of rice, chicken, juice, water and a piece of cake and is served fresh and carefully wrapped up in plastic packages. "The price per meal is SR12 for people who want to donate food to the poor," he added.
Al-Qurashi said the distribution would be made according to the wishes of the donor. "The distribution may be among poor families registered at the society, the "arbita" (shelter homes for the poor), the visitors of the Grand Mosque or the poor people who usually stay close by the Haram according to the wish of the donors," he explained.
Al-Qurashi said the society would supervise, closely follow up and help distribute the donation of philanthropists who give 10,000 meals or more.
Al-Qurashi said the society has a special account at Al-Rajhi Bank to receive donations and also has a special telephone number for queries (05045045856).
