BAGHDAD: A US military official says Iraqi troops trained by the US-led coalition are being added for the first time to the assault force Iraq is using in its push to retake the city of Ramadi.
The news that about 3,000 US-trained Iraqi army soldiers were added to the fight in recent days was briefed to Defense Secretary Ash Carter, who was in Baghdad.
Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren says one of those newly trained units advanced about 4 miles toward Ramadi within the last 24 hours.
Daesh took Ramadi, the capital of hard-fought Anbar province, earlier this year as Iraqi troops that hadn’t been trained by the US fled. That led Carter to complain that the Iraqis had “no will to fight.”
