JEDDAH: Customs officers in Jeddah have thwarted an attempt to smuggle 38 kilograms of gold into the kingdom, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said on Saturday.
Saad Al-Bagmi, acting Director General of Customs at the Jeddah Islamic Port, said officers found 29 gold pieces hidden on the roof of a private car that arrived on board a ship during a routine inspection recently.
Based on current gold prices in the world market, the cost of the gold seized is more than US$1.6 million.
The report did not give further details.
Al-Bagmi reminded passengers having in their possession jewelry or cash worth more than SR60,000 to report to the customs authorities at the Kingdom's inlet/outlets to avoid legal liability.
