Language is the medium through which we communicate or exchange ideas. It is the ability to speak that differentiates the human species with all other living beings on this planet. Whether it’s English, Mandarin or Arabic, we all need language to express our thoughts and ideas. Inarguably language is tied to culture and vice versa. The number of people we encounter from different parts of the world has increased and as we influence each other more and more in the world today, both individual and unique cultures suffer losses at different levels.
In today’s world, the English language is considered the lingua franca. There are many advantages and disadvantages of one global language.
There are many advantages of using English as a global language such as, communication, education and international trade. First, having a global language helps in communicating with foreigners. It should be noted that many countries around the world prefer to use their national languages. However, the use of English has really benefited tourist and travelers around the world. Second, students from different nationalities, cultures and religion have picked up the English language easily. Third, English has become the lingua franca for international trade and that has brought people from all cultures and countries together to exchange goods and services.
On the other hand, using English as a global language has its disadvantages as well. Getting too comfortable with the English language can cause you to lose value for your mother tongue. Secondly, with the increased usage of the lingua franca the individuals customs and traditions start to fade and with time I believe that the world will share universal customs if we don’t stick to our own language and traditions after all customs make us who we are. Thirdly, most of the jobs today require the use of English that could reduce job opportunities for some of those who choose to stick to their mother tongue.
