MADINAH: The Ministry of Labor and Social Development says that 512 companies in 70 cities around the Kingdom offer freelance jobs to those with certain skills required by companies, people with special needs, and those who are unable to report to office locations.
Abdullah Al-Husseini, an advertisement designer, says technology has helped facilitate access to jobs for jobseekers. Just sending an e-mail to companies indicating one’s skills and capabilities is enough to convince the companies to hire them, he says.
“Freelancing from home means more freedom and less risks,” says Anwar Al-Jilani, noting that freelancers can provide services needed from home while employers can benefit tremendously from such employees.
Information technology expert Adel Al-Qahtani said there are more opportunities for jobs online that allow individuals to provide analyses and consultancies from home, under the supervision and monitoring of large companies. Social activist, Fatma Habeeb, says the Internet is full of job ads requesting freelancers in different fields.
However, according to Amani Al-Aluan, a social researcher at Suleiman Al-Ahmadinejad Hospital, freelance work is not always suitable for all as it requires motivation, respect for deadlines and a good work ethic. That said, reports indicate 34 percent of employees in the United States work from home and online, and rely on freelancing as their main source of income.
Reports indicate many employees earn incomes from posting articles online and making money from advertisements on sites, with companies like Facebook competing directly with Google over the past two years via employees working officially from home.
