This refers to the story, “113 die as building falls near Dhaka” (April 25). It is very sad and distressing that scores of innocent lives have been lost in this disaster. I find no words to express my sorrow and grief. The faulty structure crumbled down on Wednesday killing and maiming scores of laborers who were working on its various floors. Within minutes, the building turned into a huge pile of rubble. As the rescue operation continues, the death toll is mounting. So far 250 bodies have been pulled out of the wreckage.

What is more disconcerting is the fact that deep cracks visible in the walls of the building had compelled police to order it evacuated a day before it collapsed, but the owner of the building did not abide by the order. Such carelessness on the part of the owner is tantamount to committing a felony of the worst kind and the relevant authorities should bring him to justice. Only an exemplary punishment to the owner will send signals to other owners who would construct a house disregarding government guidelines and building codes.

Our sympathy goes with the family members of the dead and the injured.
