This is with reference to the report “Nine die in truck plunge (July 11). During the month of Ramadan, roads of the Kingdom usually wear a deserted look up to 10 in the morning. Despite absence of traffic during these hours, most of the road accidents take place during this time.

It is due to less or no traffic on roads during the morning hours in Ramadan that people ignore all speed limits, which results in accidents. The other day, I saw a freak road accident on Al-Kharj highway, in which four vehicles were involved. One of the cars was turned turtle and rotating at a high speed even in that position. I urge motorists not to violate speed limits even when there is no traffic on the road. These rules are for our own protection. An empty road does not make it safe to drive at neck-breaking speeds. Reckless behavior on the road threatens oneself and others. It is better late than never.

I would like to quote American comedian and thinker George Carlin here: “Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac.”
