This is with reference to the article “Honing communication skills is a must” (Feb. 16) by Saad Al-Dosari. I fully agree with the views of the writer regarding making efforts to improve one’s communication skills. Unfortunately, this phenomenon is not exclusive to Saudi Arabia. Education systems in most Muslim countries don’t cater to the needs of the modern world. In addition to personal efforts, schools could play a huge role in helping students improve their writing and public speaking skills. In most cases, students realize the importance of communication skills once they join a university, where they are required to do presentations. It surely creates problems. I, for instance, can very well empathize with students who are, all of a sudden, asked to stand in front of the entire class to throw light on some issue. I was one of those students who were known for maintaining a low profile throughout my school and college days but it was challenged in the university. I remember shivering in my boots when one of our professors called me up to speak on a certain topic for five minutes. Gosh, the mere thought of that day still sends shivers up my spine. It was then that I realized the importance of honing communication skills since schooldays. Although, I have managed to overcome my hesitation but I feel those who had been properly trained since their childhood are still much better than me.

There is a great need for introducing communication classes at the school level so as to prepare students for the future. I appreciate the writer for highlight a very important issue.
