This is with reference to the article “Daesh — exploiting religious sentiments” (Sept. 12) by Ibrahim Al-Othaimin. I do agree with the writer that the terrorist organization, Daesh, and its likes are only exploiting Muslims’ religious sentiments to promote their selfish interests. I, however, don’t agree with the ways to counter Daesh as suggested by the writer. There is no doubt that we need to educate Muslim masses about Islam and its true teachings and we should make efforts to counter Daesh’s propaganda but the idea of promoting western ideals about nationalism among Muslims is the worst idea I have ever come across in my life.

We, Muslims, are a different people. Our concept of Ummah stands against all western theories of nationhood and nationalism. It is sad to note that Muslim writers are suggesting such ways to fight Daesh. The terror group, no doubt, is a huge threat but such measures will prove to be counterproductive in the long run. Muslims need to understand that our interests are interlinked. We need to act together against such threats not by deviating from the basic concepts of Islam but by following true Islamic teachings in letter and spirit. I think we should work toward the creation of a Muslim union with Saudi Arabia as its base or headquarters.

By inculcating in our youth the western ideas of nationhood, we will be driving a wedge between our own people. Instead, we should increase cooperation in all spheres of life. One thing is crystal clear, organizations like Daesh and Al-Qaeda don’t enjoy mass support. Those getting swayed by Daesh propaganda are not well-versed with the true teachings of Islam. Daesh is using social media. First step that should be taken is to ban all such outlets.
